End of the Year!

Today completes the end of my 2nd year of Road riding, and my 1st year of racing. As far as racing goes, I only did 5 races, but I still call it a year of racing. But for 2011, it will be a COMPLETE year of racing. I like to think of this year as a beta year, or and introductory year. For 2011, it's time to get into the game, or rather, shift into full gear.

2010 was also my first complete year of riding, with a road bike. I did get my road bike in 2009 (April), but my riding wasn't as serious as the riding this year.

Also, 3 quarters of the year were completed without a training plan or training structure, and the last quarter was done with a training plan that was largely ignored, however the new training plan which started 12/6 has been followed and will be continued to be followed hopefully throughout 2011.

I also met a whole bunch of new riders, including a large batch of Junior riders. It was nice having more people and more new people on rides because it's a great way to see your ability compared to others. It's also a great way to exercise social skills and communication.

While I can say this year went great, there were a lot of things that held me back, which I will try to avoid in 2011. Social Life will have to be replaced with more Academic work in order to make room for training, and a relationship, which is unnecessary, will be impossible to squeeze into the schedule, which won't be too much of a problem until September when college comes.

2011 will be my 2nd but last year as racing Juniors, but I don't mind too much since I'll be racing in the Elites for most of 2011, especially since the current Juniors (17-18) have too much more experience than me. But that still doesn't hold me back.

But anyway, have a happy new year, and have a great 2011!

A New Way of Training

Hello! Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas!

I'd just like to say that I'm now able to further share my training information with the use of Strava and GarminConnect. I'll be posting some meaningful rides using those sites and softwares.

Now that I have my hands on a Garmin Edge 500, I'll be able to monitor Heart Rate which means a little more accurate calorie counting and training zones. I'll also be able to find out Elevation gain.

Thanks to this, it will add more resources to training and better logging of information. Hopefully in the near future I can get the final piece of the training tool; the power meter.

On another note, I have a flat tire and I don't know If I'm going to purchase a new one or try to patch the tire up, but It did give me a 2:30:00 deficit which means my hours that I need to reach are 5:24:00 by tomorrow, but I'm not going to push myself to reach that because of San Bruno's race. I have a 17 Hour annual surplus anyways.

December 13- December 19 Training

(Click the picture to view full size)

This week was a little different because most of my workouts was done on a trainer. With the aid of youtube and unwatched DVDs, I was able to ride for a more prolonged time than I normally do. Usually I call it quits at around an hour because of the boredom, but lately I've been able to survive two hour rides without going crazy from the boredom.

So my trainer days were Tuesday and Friday to Sunday. On Tuesday I did a Max Cadence drill as well as Isolated Leg spinning. On Wednesday I went up San Bruno Mountain and saw Nolan on the way there, so we went up together at a high effort pace, which was a great wake-up call for the race, which is in about two weeks. On Thursday, I went at a relaxed effort to stay in aerobic level. Friday to Sunday consisted of Aerobic Endurance maintenance on the Trainer. I went over my goal of 10:30 by 10:42 which I was happy with.

BTW, my Cyclometer has been malfunctioning, and I've been relying on my SportsTracker GPS app on my phone, which is pretty accurate since it came up with consistent data compared with my cyclometer. I don't know IF I'll get a replacement anytime soon, but I've been using the stopwatch as a timer to time my workouts so I think it's okay.

That explains why my Cadence, Average Speed, and Distance has been missing.

If I had to guess I'm pretty sure that my Distance for the two hour trainer rides would be about 32 miles each, and the one hour ones at about 15.5 miles.

Happy Holidays!

Total Time: 10:42:22
Total Distance: ~155 Miles

Officially a Peninsula Velo Rider!

I'm officially in the Peninsula Velo Cycling club/team for the 2011 cycling season, and hopefully for many years to come. I decided to choose Penvelo, despite the lack of juniors (except now, there's 4 Juniors on the team now) because of all the friendly people I've met, and to represent the San Mateo County in the races to come. I'm planning on joining the Performance Team to further enhance my riding skills and my racing skills.

Weekly Report 12/6 - 12/12

So week 1 of my Base Period is over, and I have 11 long weeks to train for the build period. This week's workload was a lot for Base 1, which means I have to lower the intensity during my rides a little. This might also mean that I might have to omit the PenVelo rides for a while, or at least do them every other week. Other than that, i missed my time goal by 51 Seconds!

Now that vacation is coming up, in the next few weeks I'll be visiting Woodside's two popular climbs, King's Mountain and Old La Honda to prepare for the San Bruno Hill Climb. That means I can start doing rides in the early morning!

Don't forget, I have a key that says what the colors mean!

Note: I don't have a scale I can weigh myself at the moment AND on Sunday's ride, my computer died so I used my Phone's GPS Tracker, and it counts stoplights and stop signs which adds "0" or ridiculously low speeds like 2mph to the average speed.

Getting Back Into the Training Season!

That's right, starting Monday, December 6, my official training season will start. Of course, the hardcore training workouts don't start until March-April, but this is still the time where I completely overhaul my diet and my schedule. Of course, I'll be starting the Base 1 Period, which is pretty much like what I've been doing for the past month. That is, I'll continue cross-training through running and strength workouts, but I'll have minimum weekly hours.

On another note, I sent my application to join the Peninsula Velo Bicycle Club. I'll also be doing the San Bruno Hill Climb race. I've been very happy with some of the times I've been getting during regular rides, but I need to do at least 3 race effort trials before the actual race. This race is pretty important to me, because San Bruno Mountain is pretty much my training mountain and I think it's necessary for me to do okay! I'm going to post up my schedules and season goals as well.

September 2010

So this was the final month in which I trained hard, and I only resumed training for one race, the Mt. Tamalpais hill climb. I didn't do the Oakland Grand Prix because honestly, I wasn't too enthusiastic about it, partly because most of my competition would be the powerful Juniors!

So this month is pretty self-explanatory, it was mostly training, and towards the end, I started my transition into the Transition period!

September 6 - September 12 Training

With Mt. Tamalpais being (now) less than a week away, I have two more days where I need to go very intense in order to prepare myself for the racing intensity again, especially because this is a climbing race. I'll be racing with other Juniors, and because this isn't a criterium, I'm expecting a median place, or the top 50%. If it was a criterium, I would probably be dead last.

So I did a typical 6 week, easy hard pattern day. Monday and Saturday I did Over Unders on San Bruno Mountian's Radio Road. Monday was wet, but Saturday was pretty nice. I noticed that my Lactate Tolerance is very low, meaning when I go hard, my leg fatigues pretty fast. I don't remember being like this before, so I'm assuming I'm out of shape, but tomorrow when I continue the intervals I'm hoping to see a little change, because there's a possibility I could've just been tired or something. On Thursday I did an anaerobic workout in which I did my typical South San Francisco-Brisbane-SSF-Daly City loop, but 3 minutes all-out 5 minutes recovery. I really don't want to overtrain for a race that's not too important (but important enough for me since it's a climbing event). All recovery days were just normal rides in which I looked around. I also want to express my sorrow for those victims of the San Bruno Gas Line fire. I rode around the area a bit, and just thinking about it was very emotional.

On Sunday, i rode to my LBS to get my headset adjusted, and to buy a spare inner tube. Unfortunately, Chance got a flat tire so we rode to Sports Basement, and then Mario, Nolan, and I got picked up by Mario's parents since it was too late to ride home. (6:30pm) This week should be similar, with Mt. Tam at the end of the week. I'm also going to skip Friday to wash my bike or hang out with my friends.

August Time and Distance Graph

Time Graph on top, Distance on bottom. This is showing my decreasing workload in preparation for late training in September.

August 30 - September 5 Riding

Alright so I finished the last week of August, and the first week of September. This week was alright since I got to do a trip to Woodside on Wednesday, a really random day to go there. After Wednesday, I was getting a little exhausted, I think I was getting a little physical burnout, then it eventually turned into mental burnout. This was evident on Friday, when I was just so bored that I wanted to go home. On Saturday, I took a break because Saturdays are my long rides, and that would have made it even worst. But after learning that the Mt. Tamalpais Hill Climb and the Oakland Grand Prix are to be held the last two weeks of September, I snapped out of it and got back to business.

So I rode with Chance for about 50% of my ride (Sunday), and then just rode around South San Francisco. I got a flat tire when I got home so I guess I'm taking a day off tomorrow and I'll see if I can get that replacement tube soon!

But now that I've decreased workload and volume, I can extend actual "training" for the rest of September, meaning that I'll be doing intervals again, more hard rides, and less group rides, until October!

August 2010

August was my deadline for a 2000-mile goal. Well actually, the milestone was to be reached before school started, and I completed that goal. As you may have noticed, the colors of August are mostly greens. I took this month very easy to prevent burnout later on in the month, and I was pretty successful with that. Plus I'm remaining in my base period for a couple of more weeks, then after the Mt. Tamalpais climb in September, I'll transition into a more easier workload.

I improved a lot on the flats, but I felt like I ignored climbing and so September I'll do a little more climbing. I also need to work on an efficient crank rotation, and I need to integrate that to my climbing as well.

On another note, August had some great weather, and I had a lot of fun this August. It was great to have more riding partners, 2 to be exact, so that there's less boredom in riding. I'm not saying riding is boring in general, but It does get kind of boring when there's no one to talk to.

Anyways all I can see in September is regular riding, with a few training workouts next week since Mt. Tam is coming around the corner.

August 23 - 29 Riding

(Click the picture to view full size)

This week was an example of how school is going to limit my cycling time. It's not only the academics, but the social life too because Friday I was set to do a 40 mile ride, but we had a school rally, and I was just so pumped that I didn't really feel like biking so I went to Wingstop (Chicken Wings restaurant) with 3 other friends, but at least I had fuel for Saturday's ride. But anyways, I do have a weekly minimum of 9 hours so I'm good, but by 5 minutes...

Alright so on Monday it was close to 85 degrees...in South San Francisco! So Kenneth and I biked around South San Francisco, Westborough and Hickey--> El Camino Real, to be exact. It was a fast paced ride and we had some shade for 1/3 of the loop we did. On Tuesday it was even hotter, so I did homework and then rode at around 5:45 and it was great, nice and breezy. I stayed around South San Francisco, around Mission Rd and Chestnut and Commercial and Orange Park. Saturday I did an easy Solo Ride to Woodside, and did a sort of time trial effort, but it was pretty easy and fun. Then Sunday, I did the same route but turned around on the first mile of Canada road to meet up with Mario, Kenneth, Nolan, and Chance, and we rode together back to South San Francisco. Going to Canada, I maintained 19mph for my average speed, the fastest ever, which is the reason I considered it an Intense ride. Plus it was hot!

August 16 - August 22 Riding

(Click Picture to view full size)

Okay so this week went by so slow. I did have time for some rides, but I'm getting scared that I won't be able to do more than two hours each day. I don't know why but some days it takes me over more than an hour and half to do 15 miles, which is why my distance count is so low. I also took a two days off the bike, one was because of the first day of school and second was to bond with some friends.

On Monday I did an easy ride but I forget where I went. I believe I went to San Bruno because I was getting tired of Summer homework. On Wednesday and Thursday Kenneth and I met up to do some sprints with a slow-pace recovery for a very easy effort those days. Saturday I rolled down to Woodside at a pretty fast pace, for over 40 of the miles I maintained a 17mph pace until the hills came. And Sunday I rode with Nolan and Mario to the end of Sawyer camp, going back we "raced" our way back, which was a lot of fun, but drained me out. When I got back to South San Francisco, I did some more miles around Centennial Trail, the school and Chestnut.

August 9 - August 15 Riding

(Click the picture to view Full Size)

Alright! Another week of cycling finished. This was actually one of my easiest weeks this summer because I was just building up for base miles. I mean, look at all that green! It was a good week also because I took two days off of the bike. Had I not, I would've probably gone about over 200 miles and 15 hours. However, I did complete my 2000-mile summer goal which was good for me!

Alright so Monday I took an easy ride just to get out of the house, Tuesday I decided to visit Old La Honda Road to set a new personal record, which was a success. I got 20:30 which was around 3 minutes faster than my old record. Wednesday and Thursday I went on a vacation with my family to Reno, which was a great refresh. Then Friday I planned to climb up San Bruno Mountain but the gate was closed so I continued into Brisbane and back to South San Francisco. Saturday, the big day, was when me and a few friends climbed Mt. Diablo for the first time! It was a great climb, not too steep, but pretty long! And Sunday I had a reunion ride with Kenneth, who had some off time too for about a week.

August 2 - August 8 Riding

(Click the picture to view full-size)

I'm pretty much finished with hard workouts, this upcoming week I'm going to finish off the last of my sprinting and Anaerobic intervals. After that, I'll just be riding easy to moderate base miles and I'm looking forward to the centuries I'll be doing.

This week was relatively easy and was almost like a full recovery week. Most of my rides were done at the San Bruno Mountains with another riding partner, Nolan, except for Thursday when I re-visited polo fields and golden gate park as well as Lake Merced, and Friday where Nolan and I rode to Woodside and back at an easy pace.

Saturday I rode with the big boys of our school's cross country team. They did a fairly good job keeping up at a pretty brisk pace, which I expected, since they do have a long history of aerobic workloads. Then we visited a little of the Brisbane hills and rode back into South San Francisco via Centennial Trail.

Sunday was a lot like Saturday except instead of finishing Radio Road we went into the winding and steep hills of Brisbane. It reminded me of European mountains because the roads were so tight and there were houses on the side. Only thing was, it was a bit steeper but very short.

Overall, I had a good easy week and I needed it after all the harder workouts done the month before.

Timpani Criterium Race Report

This race was held August 1, 2010.

This might be my last criterium of the year if the Oakland Grand Prix isn't rescheduled. But I felt really good about my effort in this race, I exploded in the end, but it doesn't matter since it still counts toward my 10 races to CAT4.

My mom and I arrived early, about 8:40, to the course and registration. My race was at 10:10, with all the extra time I had I was able to properly pin my number and get a very good warm-up on my trainer. By 9:40 I was all done with my warm-up, and I had time to finish a clif bar and a bottle of Propel, and then go to the bathroom. I still had a lot of time so I did a little loop which other people were doing.

After that I met up with Alex Lau and Kasra Shokat and we went to the starting line. My goal was to be in the very front row, and I thought I had blown my chances when the official called Juniors for rollout, but I was still able to get to the front on time.

We were mentored for a bit, and then the race began. The start line advantage was a success, for the next two laps I was in 2nd position behind another Junior. The pace was extremely easy so I took advantage of that to pay attention to the course and be aware of attacks. Surprisingly, for the whole race, there were no breakaways or major attacks.

By 10 mintues I was already in the middle of the pack. I tried my best to not fall back, but the road was just too wide that anyone can come around from the side. For most of the race, I ended up in the back, but on the finish line straight I would try to come around to the front. This was a major waste of energy, and it was due to my poor skills in cornering, which I need to improve.

On the bell lap I tried to open a big gap but that move completely drained my energy, and so I fell to the very back of the pack, finishing second to last (41/42), however, the pack remained close together. I was a little upset with my move, but I was proud of my effort during the whole race, and I was proud to realize that I improved and that my training really paid off.

July 2010

July was a great month! Most of the days were spent doing high-intensity workouts on the bike to better prepare me for criteriums and intense situations during road races. I also experienced my first criterium (July 18th) which didn't go to well, but was still pretty fun

I spent 56 and a half hours on the bike and did 859.16 miles. I think this is good enough for just a CAT5 racer, plus most of my workouts were based on time, and I didn't care too much about the distance. When I return to my base period, I'll pay attention to both distance and time.

So this is the first time I'm going to post my log up on blogger, the colors mean the difficulty (green easy, red hard, blue race) and some of those codes are my workout abbreviations but that's not too important unless someone is dying to know, I'll post my personal key up.

For August, I'm going to spend the first week on a easy pace climbing, and next week I'll be doing the last of my intervals on flat roads. After that, school starts and I'll be riding more base miles. My next races are in September, I believe I have two or three depending if one of them gets cancelled.

June 2010

June was the end of my peak period because the races are starting to settle down. I kind of peaked for no reason since I didn't really do any races, but the purpose of this peak was to get muscular, anaerobic, and general endurance at peak, of course.

My endurance is getting great. My 45 mile rides to Woodside and back can now be generalized as an "easy day" if I need one if I've been working too hard. I don't get too tired as much as before either.

The middle of June, I focused on climbing. I visited the San Bruno mountains nearly every day for the 2nd and half of the third week. My climbing should be improving as well.

I didn't know the Oakland Criterium would be cancelled, but the end of June I focused primarily on Sprint power and flat force. This includes power workouts, force workouts, and of course muscular endurance workouts.

And the very end of june, Kenneth and I did a century! June was a good month!

I also now have a new training partner, along with Kenneth. Nolan, an experienced runner, will now be joining Kenneth and I on a lot of our rides now. In the very future, I hope to see all three of us at a race.

Training Report 6/7-6/13

So my Training weeks will always start on a Monday, just to accomodate with school schedule, and it will end on Sundays of course.

So Monday and Tuesday, 6/7 and 6/8, were off days. Monday was intended to be a rest day, while Tuesday I had poll work.

Wednesday was the official start of the week (for this week) and I kicked it off by riding with Kenneth. When I met with him he had already started riding, but he and I continued to do Sprint Intervals on Callan, Southbound Sprint and Northbound recovery. Then we moved over to Gellert Boulevard for a more challenging sprint as the road there has some uphill resistance, Southbound. Kenneth finished early then I continued to South San Francisco's bart trails to close my ride up at around 30 Miles.

Thursday I took a Moderate-Hard pace to King's Mountain to do some climbing. I did the climb at about 32 minutes. My goal for this year is to get a 25 mintue climb on King's Mountain. During the climb, I realized my legs were out of shape for climbing, so I have to focus on climbing for the weeks to come.

Friday I was tired so I took an easy recovery ride via San mateo, on the Crystal Springs trails. The weather was great and it felt better with the loads of scenery.

Saturday I went back to Canada Road at a Moderate Pace, doing about 45 miles.

Sunday I had the opportunity to go back to Canada Road, but unlike Saturday I was able to go all the way to the town of Woodside.

This week was productive on the bike I'm too lazy to post the actual data, but I did about 195miles, 13hours.

San Bruno Hill Climb Race Report

(This was form January 2010)

After all the anticipation building up, i finally let it out at the 2010 San Bruno Mountain Hill Climb. The course 3.5 Miles of pure climbing. That means no flats or no Descents, although there was ONE dip but it wasn’t significant to recover.

I met up with my biking partner Ken and we drove to the event. We registered and warmed up on our respective trainers. I was happy to be warm enough to take off both my arm and leg warmers, wearing nothing but Spandex Shorts and My Biking Jersey.

The race was starting. The start was organized into the seperate categories of racing. I believe the Juniors were the 4th group to start. When we started i was so excited, and that rush of excitment motivated me.

The very start of the race is a lengthy climb, i practiced and discliplined myself to not climb it fast in order to save energy for the rest of the course, that being said, i was now a part of a small peloton group which was forming and i started to draft the end.

A gap was forming between the lead group and I, and i was focusing to stay behind one rider who was from team Davis Cycling club. There was a gap between me and him and with a lot of effort i was able to close it. It was getting very hot and i was now at the actual mountain. There was lots of cheering and motivation, and in the end i was content with my effort.

The results are not up yet, however i believe i placed in the top 10 with a time of under 19 minutes, hopefully.

The race was a great experience, and it was a great way to start the new year. I can’t wait for my next one, which is the Early Bird Road Race on January 23 in Fremont.

Happy New Year everyone.

End of the Third Month Review

Dubbed “The Worst Month” of 2010 (So Far). It sucked so bad it’s funny. Get a load of this!

•375 Miles for the Month•One, 100+ Mile within 6 hours
•27 Hour Total Monthly Ride Time
•3 Interval Days lasting an hour or longer
•20 Miles In Less than 1 Hour, 6 Minutes
•San Bruno Hill Climb Route 18:10 or below
•Strength Train Once a Week
•Time Myself On Canada Road Stretch

Those were my goals at the beginning of the month, and i completed NONE of them. How terrible is that LOL.

For the month, i only did 303 Miles with a Monthly Ride time of 20 hours.

Thats What i’m supposed to be doing in one week!

SO let’s break it down. Rain towards the end of the month, but not enough to stop me. Homework stress, and I got sick with a heavy cold on one week. Then relationship problems with girlfriend, so i became discouraged to ride after the 27th, even on the damn trainer.

Then we have Junior Prom. Well really I honestly enjoyed it but it stressed me out enough to be disgusted about riding.

Damn, I hope April is Better!

April Goals and Aspirations (From Tumblr)

So the month just started, but I’m excited for this month? Why? Because this month will bring changes to not only cycling, but the other parts of my life. I’m single now, which means I can dedicate time which would’ve been used up, on friends, academics, and ultimately cycling :)

I also have some good news concerning my overall health. I weigh 115 pounds, which means I am 10 pounds off my “limit” which means i’m not afraid to gain 10 pounds of muscle mass for my upper body. I’m mainly working on the chest and the upper arms (biceps, triceps) and the shoulders. The rest of the body can be trained by the bike.

Still unsure if I can lower my bedtime, and get at least 7 hours of sleep. My optimal will be 8 hours of sleep.

And even though it’s on May 1, i’m excited for the Race in Los Gatos, i want to at least finish it, then get top ten, or better yet a Podium position.

Unfortuneatley, March did not bring great results, so i need to set the saem goals for March for April.
Here they are

375 Miles for the Month One
100+ Mile within 6.5 hours
27 Hour Total Monthly Ride Time
3 Interval Days lasting an hour or longer 20 Miles In Less than 1 Hour, 9 Minutes
San Bruno Hill Climb Route 18:10 or below
Strength Train Twice a Week
Time Myself On Canada Road Stretch

I’ll leave out aspirations because i’m too lazty to think =p
That is all!

Testing

Test! Hello =)
